IMSyPP: top research and policy advice on hate speech and polarization

Hate speech is spreading in social media channels of news outlets, and in comment sections of news sites. We contribute to the Innovative Monitoring Systems and Prevention Policies of Online Hate Speech (IMSyPP). It tackles hate speech in a multidisciplinary fashion combining machine learning, computational social science and linguistic approaches.

Challenge

The different ways in which news is presented can trigger a wide range of different responses. To automatically detect hate speech in news channels and comment sections is already highly complex.

But we had to tackle both English and Dutch, and identify triggers along the way. Complement detection with recommending effective counter narratives. Then take it further and translate this experience into policy proposals to the European communication regulators.

Solution

We are happy to contribute as a part of a consortium of top research teams in artificial Intelligence, machine learning, misinformation and counter narratives. This includes major international platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Reddit.

We create hate speech models using machine learning, and apply sustainable tech principles. We deploy them in online settings, analyze big data and identify trends and types of triggers. This includes a pilot study on counter narratives as well.
