Targeting online sexism and sexual harassment against women
Online sexism and sexual harassment against women are often downplayed, whereas racist, nationalist and antisemitic rhetoric on fringe social media platforms and image boards is well-documented. Can tools specifically target this issue, offer insight and help create more awareness?
Challenge
The problem of online sexism and sexual harassment is often downplayed. Even automated hate speech detection systems are less sensitive when it comes to this kind of toxic content that targets women.
Solution
We are developing tools that specifically target online sexism and sexual harassement. Aimed at both mainstream and alternative online platforms, we analyze sexism, sexual harassement amd the toxic
‘Manosphere’.
By choosing to only screen for ‘woman’ as one neutral word, instead of including sexist slurs, we prevent steering the analysis in a biased direction.
